Staff Packaging Engineer, Full Time, Easton PA
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Provides structural packaging design, development and documentation for new and existing products, as well as merchandising displays on a global scale.
Maintains working knowledge of packaging equipment, industry trends, and customer requirements so support all areas of the business with respect to packaging.
Works with the cross-functional team to deliver high impact packaging designs keeping in mind function, cost and user experience.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Executes the development of structural packaging for new and existing products globally.
Responsible for best-in-class product integrity and shelf appearance, maintaining a working knowledge of packaging innovations, materials, trends, manufacturing methods, and vendor capabilities.
Responsible for development of high impact merchandising displays across all accounts.
Interacts with cross functional team as well as outside vendors to achieve deadlines while remaining at or below cost.
Participates in the analysis of packaging assembly, shipping and material costs to determine the best package while remaining cost effective.
Influences cross-functional team as well as outside vendors on the implementation of innovative packaging that complies with all internal and customer standards.
Maintains working knowledge of all customer standards including mass, eCommerce, club, food, drug, value, specialty, and direct-to-consumer.
Provides insights and expertise to the cross-functional team ensuring the viability of packaging designs and manufacturability within planned financial targets and global compliance standards including, but not limited to, quality, safety, sustainability, and regulatory.
Supports the ramp-up of packaging assembly operations to ensure adherence to specifications.
Provides input to manufacturing and quality as needed in a troubleshooting and advisory capacity.
Responsible for the development and maintenance of packaging engineering drawings, specifications, pallet configurations and SAP data.
Ensures accuracy of all packaging data transmitted within and outside the company.
Routinely provides packaging material and labor cost savings while not adversely affecting packaging integrity or on-shelf appearance.
Participates in cost avoidance initiatives to offset rising material and labor costs.
Coach interns/co-op students to translate their learnings in to real-life examples and give them the opportunity to enhance their education as well as our business.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
7+ years Packaging and Product Development experience.
Creative, innovative and productive in a technical environment.
A proven track record of package design that has consumer appeal at low to moderate cost.
Professional knowledge of various rigid and flexible packaging substrates.
Professional knowledge of the Product Development Process with regard to conceptualizing and executing new products on a Global scale.
Understanding of automated packaging machinery and knowledge of manufacturing processes.
Experience working in a diverse team-based and cross-functional atmosphere.
Working knowledge of all domestic and international testing and regulatory package requirements, as well as customer specific requirements.
Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
Effective and productive in both in-person and virtual settings.
Proficient in the use of packaging specific software (ArtiosCAD, Tops/CapePack) as well as a working knowledge of enterprise software (SAP, Project Management Software, Spec systems, MS Office/365, MS Teams.
Experience operating a sample cutting table and thermoformer.
Critical thinking and the ability to identify potential issues and risks in the product development process.
Driven, proactive, and motivated, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
Able to look through a Continuous Improvement lens.
Ability to travel 5-10% of the time.
